Character of the line

Aurelian was the line that kept Imperia's continuity, the family in which lineage and ceremony did the work that records and drills did elsewhere. If Highmarch held the decision and Castellan held the wall, Aurelian held the long memory of why both were built that way, and it carried that memory with a formality the other two found slightly ornate and never quite dispensed with.

The temperament leaned toward the ceremonial and the exact. An Aurelian was the one who remembered the precedent, who kept the handover formal because the form was itself a kind of structure, and who measured a thing not by how it looked today but by whether it would still be standing for the generation that inherited it. Within a house that distrusted display, Aurelian came closest to valuing the rite, though always as something load-bearing rather than ornamental.
