Highmarch

House: Imperia
One of the eighteen locked family surnames assigned by the Archive on Varuna at first activation.

Notes on the name

Hard, weighted, formal. A name carried like a beam load-bearing in a wall.

In the genetic structure

One of three families within Imperia. The eighteen-family system is the Archive's optimisation of the founding 60,000 colonist population. Three genetically distinct groupings per house, 18 total across the system. Cross-house pairings recommended by the Archive keep the broader gene pool varied across generations.

Character of the line

Highmarch carried Imperia's weight the way a wall carries a roof, and the house leaned on it without quite saying so. Where Aurelian kept the record and Castellan held the perimeter, Highmarch held the decision itself. Its people tended toward the formal work of governance, the long grace periods and the deliberate handovers that made an Imperian transition a structural matter rather than a scramble, and they were known among the three for moving slowly on purpose and rarely needing to move twice.

The temperament was plain to the point of severity. A Highmarch officer answered the question asked and let the rest stand unspoken, and treated patience not as a virtue to be praised but as the ordinary cost of building something meant to last. The line distrusted display more openly than its siblings did, and it was Highmarch, more than the others, that the house looked to when an answer had to hold.
