Olyrissan

House: Myndari
Founding-era name (historical): Tethys
Terrain: Pelagic (ocean)

Summary

Olyrissan is the homeworld of House Myndari, an ocean world with no continents at all. The colonists who landed there named it Tethys, after the sea goddess of the Sol-system pantheons they had carried across the dark. They used that name for generations, until the recovery of the ancient record gave them the world's older one. Olyrissan is the closest translation of what the earlier civilisation called the planet, and it is the name the house uses now. Tethys survives only in the historical accounts.

The world

Olyrissan is ocean from one horizon to the other. The Myndari settled its archipelagos first and then built outward, anchoring platforms to the shallow shelf and the reef. The deep water between the settlements became part of how they think. A current raised in one place arrives in another far away, and a sound made at one platform reaches the hydrophones of the next. A people who live on open water learn that nothing that happens anywhere stays local for long. In the present era the ocean carries more than water and sound. The paired-particle technology the colonists recovered from the Lab beneath these same seas has been seeded through the water in the generations since. The ocean the Myndari learned to read has become an instrument that reads back.
