In the genetic structure
One of three families within Kael. The eighteen-family system is the Archive's optimisation of the founding 60,000 colonist population. Three genetically distinct groupings per house, 18 total across the system. Cross-house pairings recommended by the Archive keep the broader gene pool varied across generations.
Character of the line
Riven was the clean cut, the Kael line whose name meant splitting and whose instinct was the decisive stroke through anything that hesitated. Where Karrow steadied and Varkos closed, Riven committed, and the family carried the house's conviction that the closing window must never be left open out of cowardice in its sharpest form.
The temperament was direct to the edge of abruptness. A Riven made the first move and made it well, on the understanding that the first move decides who is reacting to whom, and had little patience for the player who waited for certainty the universe was never going to offer. Among the three lines, Riven was the one that drew the cut and trusted the house to balance whatever the cut set loose.
