Mirine is a Solari ocean territory, a pelagic world whose tides the old civilisation turned into a power that never stopped.
Naming voice
Mirine repeats its own vowel twice and lets the word ride on that repetition, two small swells with a soft trough between them. It is the closest thing to a tide a mouth can make. The recovery itself was one of the simplest in the whole register: a short word found in dozens of the old tide-engine records, written there so often that its reading was settled before most of the longer names had been touched.

Discovery. On the shore of one of the archipelago's islands a tidal engine still turns, slowly, in the surf. It is anchored fast to the rock, working the same water it has worked since long before anyone living was there to see it. The survey crews timed its rotation against the tide tables and found the two had never drifted apart. The machine had simply kept the ocean's own schedule for two hundred thousand years. The edict circles the engine's central hub, so reading it means going out onto the structure itself, crossing the wet frame with the spray rising off the breakers below. The crews took the words a line at a time as the slow turn of the hub carried them past.
