Vesarine

"What is made slowly is made of a thousand things that cannot be undone at once. The fast spend what they have; the slow accumulate what cannot be spent away."

House: Astraea
Terrain: Pelagic (+2 power)
Name: recovered from the ancient record through translation

Vesarine is a territory world of House Astraea, an ocean planet of strong tides, where the sea has been climbing and falling against its islands without interruption for longer than either civilisation has existed.

Naming voice

Vesarine closes on a falling vowel, and the house's translators class it among the water names of the old register, the set of recovered names whose endings seem to ebb, said most naturally with the voice dropping away at the finish.

The inscription

One of the 54 edicts: the inscription this world carries, protected under the Stratagem Accord.

Theme: Patience.
Discovery. At one island harbour a tall stone marker stands where the previous civilisation set it, barnacled along its lower length where the daily water climbs and falls. The edict is cut far higher, well above any tide the survey teams measured in their seasons on the island. The sea touches that line only on its longest cycles, in spans no single life is long enough to witness twice. By the crews' reckoning, the water has risen far enough to wet the inscription only a handful of times in all the ages since it was cut.
