Olynthe

"To see what others cannot is to carry the whole board, and the carrying is itself the advantage. The weight is not a burden to be set down but the edge no one else holds."

House: Myndari
Terrain: Pelagic (+2 power)
Name: recovered from the ancient record through translation

Olynthe is one of the ocean territories of House Myndari, an island-strewn pelagic world, and high above its sea it carries one of the edicts.

Naming voice

Olynthe is the rare old Myndari name that opens on a round vowel instead of a hiss, but the flow is the same, the sounds leaning into each other until the name ends on a soft exhale. The ancient Myndari made names you could say without ever quite closing your mouth.

The inscription

One of the 54 edicts: the inscription this world carries, protected under the Stratagem Accord.

Theme: The cost of seeing.
Discovery. On the peak of one island a stone bell-house has stood since before human history, and inside it hangs a bronze bell large enough to walk beneath. The bell has no clapper and no record of ever being rung. The survey crews who climbed the peak found the edict etched along the dry inner curve of the metal. They had to stand under the bell and read upward by lamplight, line by line, while the wind off the sea moved through the arched openings around them. The placement was deliberate. For two hundred thousand years every gust and every breaking wave had poured its sound into that curve, and the words sat at the focus of all of it.
