Notes on the name
Burn and hold together. The discipline behind the surge.
In the genetic structure
One of three families within Solari. The eighteen-family system is the Archive's optimisation of the founding 60,000 colonist population. Three genetically distinct groupings per house, 18 total across the system. Cross-house pairings recommended by the Archive keep the broader gene pool varied across generations.
Character of the line
Surnholt was the discipline behind Solari's surge, the line that held the reaction steady while the rest of the house spent freely. Its name joined the burn and the holding of it in a single word, and that was the work the family came to be known for: the hard, unglamorous control that kept a full matter-to-energy reaction from becoming a catastrophe.
The temperament was confident in the Solari way but tempered by the knowledge of what the engine could do if it slipped. A Surnholt did not ration, because rationing was contempt the house had no use for, but neither did they mistake spending for recklessness. They were the line that knew exactly how much current the housing could carry, and the house trusted them to be standing closest to the containment when it mattered.
