Tharkos
"The held strike is heavier than the thrown one. Power that need never be spent is the power most feared, so show them the wall and they will never test the fist."
House: Imperia
Terrain: Ignis (+2 power)
Name: recovered from the ancient record through translation
Tharkos is a fire world held by House Imperia, an ignis territory of cooled lava plains and calderas that have not all finished dying.
Naming voice
Tharkos strikes once and does not echo, the open first sound slamming into the k and stopping there. The last syllable is little more than the dust settling after the blow. The survey linguists matched the word against the volcanic plains it names and found the fit almost too neat, a basalt sound for a basalt world. They concluded the old civilisation heard its planets before it wrote them down.
The inscription
One of the 54 edicts: the inscription this world carries, protected under the Stratagem Accord.
Theme: Power and restraint.
Discovery. At the rim of a dead caldera the survey found a squat basalt monument, unornamented and immovable, standing on plains of dark glass with smoking peaks ranged along the far horizon. The geological record around its base told the harder part of the story. Three separate ash-falls had buried the monument completely, three slow ages of wind had dug it back out, and none of it had left a mark. The edict is cut across its face and remains fully legible, words about the strike that is never thrown on a world built entirely of strikes that were. The monument had been placed within sight of the volcanoes, and it had simply outlasted their arguments.
