Silence

One of the six artifacts recovered from the ruins of the ancient civilisation that ended itself ~200,000 years ago.

What it is

Silence is a single ancient blade, and the only one of the six artifacts that could never be reproduced. It is nearly impossible to see. Detection fails against it across the spectrum, the eye slides past it, and sensors return nothing or close to nothing. The blade is real and it cuts, but it does not show itself, and a Nox who carries it walks through a room unobserved by people and machines alike.

The dome

Silence is kept on Velhuneth inside a structure the previous civilisation built for one purpose: stillness, and the seeing that comes from it. A great black dome stands over a white parabolic dish a kilometre across, set level with the ground. From within, the dome's walls turn clear as one-way glass, and the night sky lies open overhead as though nothing stood between the viewer and the dark. A tower rises from the centre of the dish to its focal point, and at the top a second dome, black without and clear within, encloses a single platform. Warm air rises from beneath it, and there are no electronics anywhere in the space.

On the platform stands a chair-bed, semi-elevated rather than flat, so the practitioner reclines with the head raised, the body settled, and the mind given room to go quiet. At the foot of the bed an arm curves up and forward into a small flat pedestal that meets the reclined practitioner at eye level, and there Silence stands upright on its end, point to the ceiling, its edge turned toward the one who lies there. The practitioner does not look at the flat of the blade. They look down it, from the tip downward along its length, sighting along the one thing that cannot itself be seen. In that stillness a trained viewer learns to perceive what the senses cannot reach, the hidden and the distant alike, by sighting along the blade that nothing in the world can find.
