Notes on the name

Shadow-spun. The house's most prominent line. Produced Lillith (first crosser, Guide founder), Vincent (current Gatekeeper Commander), and Vera (the Hero whose return triggers the Era of Stratagem).

In the genetic structure

One of three families within Nox. The eighteen-family system is the Archive's optimisation of the founding 60,000 colonist population. Three genetically distinct groupings per house, 18 total across the system. Cross-house pairings recommended by the Archive keep the broader gene pool varied across generations.

Character of the line

Umberlin was Nox's most prominent line, the shadow-spun family that produced the house's defining figures, among them the first crosser who founded the Guide, the current Gatekeeper Commander, and the Hero whose return from the Veil triggered the present era. Within a house that measured a victory by whether it could be traced back at all, Umberlin carried the paradox of being the line whose work was most felt and least seen.

The temperament was the Nox discipline turned to its highest pitch. An Umberlin did not raise her voice, did not announce an arrival, and understood that the most dangerous thing in a room was the one no one had noticed and that the goal was to be that thing. Of the three lines it was the one that carried the heaviest histories quietly, the family the house leaned on when what mattered was what came back rather than what was seen to happen.
