Ushra is a territory world of House Nox, a planet of ice and long polar dark, its winters measured in months of unbroken night and a cold that keeps everything it touches.
Naming voice
Ushra begins on a breath rather than a consonant, and the translators record that in the old register it was a whispered name even by Nox standards, the kind of word the wind on the ice could carry away half-said.

Discovery. A single black monolith stands alone on the polar ice plain, with nothing else built or standing within the survey's whole radius. The windward face has been scoured blank by two hundred thousand years of driven ice, ground smooth as worked glass. The edict is cut into the lee face, the side the wind has never reached. Crews laid a straight-edge across the letters and found the strokes still cut to their original depth, not a millimetre surrendered. One stone, and the planet had spent the same ages on both sides of it, erasing the face that fought the storm and sparing the face that never fought.
