Skarvun

"The dune will not hold, and neither should you. The only ground worth taking is the ground you take before it shifts again."

House: Kael
Terrain: Duneclad (+1 power)
Name: recovered from the ancient record through translation

Skarvun is a desert world held by House Kael, duneclad territory where the sand moves constantly and nothing built on the surface stays on the surface for long. It holds one of the edicts, and the desert nearly kept it.

Naming voice

Skarvun grinds open and shuts hard, the loose second syllable caught by the closing consonant before it can spread, and the fractured old Kael rhythm runs right through it. It is a name with sand in it, rough at the front and gone at the end.

The inscription

One of the 54 edicts: the inscription this world carries, protected under the Stratagem Accord.

Theme: Motion / impermanence.
Discovery. The jump-anchor had been under the dunes for most of two hundred thousand years when subsurface survey finally found it. It was an alloy structure of the ancient Kael network, lying in the path of a dune field that migrates as a single body, walking downwind a few metres every year. The drift models showed the anchor's crown passing through the trough between two dunes for one short season. Then the next crest would roll over it and put it back under for decades. The crews staged their camp in advance and met the structure as it surfaced. They had weeks, not years. The edict was etched across the top of the metal, wind-polished to a shine by every previous crossing of the dunes. The teams recorded it complete while the following crest stood on the horizon, visibly nearer each morning. The site is buried again now, and the models give the date it will next come clear.
