Notes on the name

The keep-warden's name. Built around holding what is built.

In the genetic structure

One of three families within Imperia. The eighteen-family system is the Archive's optimisation of the founding 60,000 colonist population. Three genetically distinct groupings per house, 18 total across the system. Cross-house pairings recommended by the Archive keep the broader gene pool varied across generations.

Character of the line

Castellan was Imperia's keep-warden line, the family most at home on the perimeter and most concerned with what it took to hold a thing once it was built. Where Highmarch governed and Aurelian remembered, Castellan watched the wall, and the house's instinct to meet every threat from ground it had already fortified ran strongest here.

The temperament was practical, exact, and unhurried under pressure. A Castellan thought first about the line that had to hold and the cost of holding it, and trusted endurance over the decisive blow as a matter of plain habit rather than philosophy. Of the three lines it was the one least interested in being seen at all, content to be the reason a position did not break while the credit went elsewhere.
