Iolune
"The line runs farthest where nothing stands to stop it. Hold to it longest, and burn brightest in the dark where none are left to see."
House: Solari
Terrain: Aetheric (+3 power)
Name: recovered from the ancient record through translation
Iolune is a Solari gas giant, an aetheric world that yields the richest power in the house's holdings. A collection ring rides its upper air, and the house works the planet from orbit, since there is no ground to work it from.
Naming voice
Iolune is almost all vowel, three open sounds with a single soft consonant holding them apart. The translators had to mark its stresses by hand because the word offered nothing to anchor them. Said correctly it rises and hangs, the long middle syllable carrying the weight the way the collection ring carries its vanes. The house counts it the highest-sounding name in its register, in both senses of the word.
The inscription
One of the 54 edicts: the inscription this world carries, protected under the Stratagem Accord.
Theme: Sustained will.
Discovery. An orbital solar-collection ring still circles the gas giant, its mirrored vanes turned out toward the distant sun. It has held its orbit without fail for longer than any people have lasted. The survey ships found it exactly where the old records said a structure should be, still tracking the light, still doing the one thing it was built to do. Inside the hub the crews found the edict etched into the wall opposite the main viewport, where the vanes and the slow-turning planet fill the view. The vacuum had kept the letters clean and unworn; nothing in two hundred thousand years had been able to reach them. The makers were gone and the gathered light went nowhere now, and still the ring tracked the sun, vane after vane turning to follow it across the dark.
